The Plurals Girls is a fun game on FunBrain.com that reinforces identifying plurals.  “Twin sisters Pearl and Flora lost their friends in the bubble machine. Help them get their friends out by choosing the correct plural form of the given word.”With each correct answer a friend appears from the bubble machine. 8 correct answers ends the game. There are two difficulty levels for each game.  The multiple choice options work well with the SMARTBoard since the game gives you two answers and you simply touch your answer.  With the fill in the blank options you need to type/spell your answers.  You could utilize the SMART On-Screen Keyboard to type the answers, as long as the cursor is in the answer box.

So if you need a game to reinforce/practice plurals head on over and introduce yourself to The Plural Girls, Pearl and Flora, they’re sure to make you smile- ENJOY!

Happy June! I learned of this wonderful site called Toy Theater from a 3rd grade teacher. Thanks Sue!  This site is filled with activities in the areas of music, math, reading and art that work wonderfully with the SMART Board.  It also offers games, playsets and puzzles.  If you are an elementary or Special Education teacher you definitely should take the time to pop over and take a look at this site. In case you hadn’t heard Topmarks has the most amazing list of free interactive whiteboard resources.  In their own words:

“We’ve been working hard to feature the best educational resources which work well on interactive whiteboards in the classroom. The resources are organised by subject, age group and category to make them easy for you to find. We are constantly updating the web sites listed here to ensure that they are current.”

So for any teacher using a SMARTBoard I would highly suggest you take a spin over to Topmarks and check it out. ENJOY!

Free Elementary Activities to Use on SMARTBoard December 31, 2008

I came across 6 free sample Spark Island activities that I found on e-gfl.org that work great on the SMARTBoard.  Each game is interactive, engaging, animated and fun! There are 2 games each that address Numeracy, Literacy and Science skills.  The Learning Outcomes are based on objectives from Wales, Northern Ireland and England, but would be appropriate for just about any learning environment.  In addition to the activities they also provide teachers with other options such as teaching suggestions and printable resources.

For literacy there is It’s A Goal which asks students to chose the correct vowel to spell basic CVC words.  The correct answer ellicits a goal! Spin to Win is my favorite! It reinforces the use of prefixes and suffixes using a very cool word spinner.

For Science there is Animal Magic which asks students to group animals according to observable similarities and differences and Home Sweet Home uses scientific evidence to explain why animals live where they do.

For Numeracy there is Play Your Cards Right which uses probability to make guesses in a card game and Down on the Farm reviews basic counting to 5.

Hope these activities help you as you plan your SB lessons for 2009- ENJOY!!

This morning on Twitter Danny Nicholson shared a fun snowman activity that works great on the SMARTBoard.  It lends itself to a wonderful activity for having students follow verbal directions, review basic counting, usng verbal language or just for creative fun!  So this activity got me thinking — how many other interactive snowman activities might I be able to find that would work well on the SMARTBoard.  All of the sites have the same basic concept- drag and drop items to build, create, dress and bring the snowman to life.  And for those school systems that discourage the Christmas themed activities these might be a nice alternative. So here I go….

1. South Florida snowman- some very cute items are provided to build this sunshine state snowman who is relaxing on the beach!

2. Ten Little Snowmen from Enchanted Learning- a great interactive book that asks students to complete a specific task to create a snowman.  Great for following directions.

3. Kent nGfl Snowman-  I love the background graphics in this activity- the falling snow, the blue sky- so beautiful!

4. Build a Snowman: An Artistic Adventure- you need Java to run this activity.

5.  Build your own Frosty- don’t forget to first drag the snowballs to make the snowman.

6. Snowman Band e-card- Hallmark has a very cute e-card where you pick the instruments you want the band of merry snowmen to play. So have your speakers turned up and ENJOY!!!

7. Build your own Snowman from Merry-Christmas.com- what is fun about this site is that it has some “unusual” items to use to create your snowman.

8. Ben & Jerry’s Virtual Snowman- you can make a very “groovy” snowman here!

9. Dress Frosty- some cute graphics

10.  Build a Snowman

So, as you can see, I found 10 sites- WOW!  If anyone has any other interactive snowman sites they have found, let me know and I’ll add them to  the list! ENJOY!

As I mentioned in a previous post, last week I went to the Notebook 10 Training  in NYC and it was great!  All of these ideas on how I can incorporate some of the new features into my Notebook lessons for the start of school are running through my head.  The Magic Pen is fantastic, the new properties options are awesome (especially the animation option), the Table Tool is super, the Shape Pen really cool, you can now easily incorporate Theme pages and not to mention all of the fabulous new interactive activities/games available in the Lesson Activity Toolkit- did I say YIPPPPPEEEEEEE!!!!!  So as promised here are some links that I hope will help you to understand and incorporate these tools into your lessons.

All of these links are from SMART Technologies. This first link, View All Features, will supply you a brief written overview of each of the features in Notebook 10 and the following five links will bring you to Quick Flash videos on how to incorporate these individual features in your lessons.  Table Tool: Create a table from the Notebook software toolbar, then insert or drag text, images and objects into any cell with ease. Magic Pen: Use this three-in-one tool to spotlight, magnify or zoom in on an image, or write notes that will disappear in 10 seconds. Draw a square to magnify an object or draw a circle to add a spotlight. Object Animation: Animate any Notebook software object with effects such as fading in, flying in or spinning. Shape Pen: Draw a freehand shape, and Notebook software recognizes it and perfects it. Create themed pages using elements such as fonts, background colors and images, and apply them to Notebook pages.  Themes: Create themed pages using elements such as fonts, background colors and images, and apply them to Notebook pages.

The other place that I like to visit for wonderful tips on maximizing your SMARTBoard is the :60 Sec Tech.  His videos are not only informative, but fun and enjoyable to watch.  He has created some Notebook 10 videos that I highly recommend watching. These links were found on Teacher Tube: The Shape Tool Pen, The Magice Pen,  and if you’re lucky enough to have a new SMART Document Camera he has created 2 videos addressing how to use this within Notebook 10 and to show science experiments in the classroom.

My hope is that this information makes it a little easier to locate some quick references and ideas regarding Notebook 10.  As they say–the possibilities are endless!!!

Fireflies light up some fun! August 3, 2008

Last night when I went to bed (looking out our brand new beautiful windows-YEAH!) I couldn’t help but notice the fireflies lighting up our back yard, like a night game at Fenway Park.  Well it started me thinking about a free interactive game that I have used with the SMARTBoard, called Fireflies.   You are introduced to three characters, Razlo, Raj and Clam.  You have to get acquainted with their jumping abilities in order to catch the fireflies and put them in the jar!  The instructions are very well explained at the start of the game, complete with demonstrations.  Each character is moved using the mouse so it’s perfect for the SMARTBoard as a fun way to practice eye/hand coordination, cause/effect, counting skills, etc.

If you’re wondering what makes a firefly glow you might want to click on this link to Learn.Gentics to check out the interactive explanation (there is a full screen option).  And don’t forget the wonderful, heart warming children’s book by Eric Carle, “The Very Lonely Firefly”,about a lonely firefly who sets out one night to find some friends.

Here’s hoping your yard is filled with the glow of fireflies and fun!
