I learned about this neat Interactive Number Line from the Oxford University Press over at Diigo.com on the Interactive Whiteboards in the Classroom Group. A number appears at the top of the page and students are challeneged to find that number on the interactive number line. Students must estimate where the number would appear, make a selection and then narrow down their selection until they match the exact number. This application would also work very well on the SMARTBoard. ENJOY!
Update- Jim Hollis from Teachers Love SMARTBoards wrote: I agree that this number line is good; on the 2nd step, SMART Board users will need to touch either to the right or to the left of center on the number line to get the number line to scroll. The farther they touch to the right or left, the faster it will scroll. This is because the movement of the number line in the 2nd step is based on where the mouse is hovering. Thanks Jim!

This morning over on Twitter I learned about this wonderful visual, interactive geometry site called Alphabet Geometry. In their own words:
“It introduces geometry concepts to your students by relating them to something they’re all familiar with, letters! And it does in a way that will keep their attention: Flash movies animate the letters so that students see more than static images (like the ones in textbooks).”
So thanks to MySMARTSpaces for sharing and to Jamie Tubbs, the creator of this wonderful resource! ENJOY!

Just a quick post to share a link to one of the many activities from Harcourt Publishers E-Lab called Finding Volume. One of the 4th grade teachers had asked to use the laptops and wanted her students to practice this concept. Finding Volume worked wonderfully. I should also mention that it also offers an accompanying recording sheet for students to complete, which compliments the activity. The E-Lab has several other math activities (many with an acompanying recording sheet) for grades 3- 6 that are definitely worth a look. ENJOY!

In case you haven’t heard, World Maths Day this year is scheduled for March 4th. So I thought I’d share a couple of math sites that I hope will help students when “training” for this very important competition! And as an added plus each of these math activities also work wonderfully with the SMARTBoard!
The first is math flash application that reviews/reinforces multiplication and division, doubles, halves, etc. There is a very nice variety of skill reinforcement opportunities with this application. Simply select the activity you want to use, It is called Hit The Button.
The next game is from 4L Puzzle Plus and reinforces multiplication and division. This game is so cool! It is designed much like a slot machine- an equation appears on the screen and students need to type in the correct answer using the onscreen calculator.
If you’re looking for a website to review/supplement basic addition skills check out Harcourt School Publishers Adding Bricks. Two construction workers literally drop bricks from their wheelbarrows and students count/add the bricks and type the answers in the answer box. A fun way to reinforce basic addition.
Found an awesome site from Saxon Math that reviews coin values (2nd grade). Students are asked to calculate the value of the coins in the box at the top of the page and then click on the correct answer from the answer field of three. There is a score box that summarizes the session (10 questions).
Hope these games/activities help your students get in tip top shape for World Maths Day 2009! ENJOY!

I have been asked by elementary teachers for math videos that would support and supplement math skills. Videos that they could use as an introduction to a new skills or a review of skills that students might be struggling with. I immediately thought of the video section on Math Playground. Not only could teachers use these videos for instruction purposes, but they could also direct students to these videos for review and support at home. The math videos available range from addition and subtraction, percentages, decimals, measurement and data, etc. ENJOY!

I wanted to share a wonderfully fun math game that works great on the SMART Board and reviews/reinforces multiplication skills, Ghost Blasters. You can set the number (2-20) that you want to review by clicking either arrow on the sides of the number. Once you pick the number the students have to touch the numbers, as they appear on the screen, that are multiples of that main number. It can be quite challenging, and as I said a fun way for reinforcement. ENJOY!

For those of you who have been eagerly waiting for Rainforest Maths to once again be up and running I have some great news—Jenny Eather has announced that the site will be returning on January 22nd. This is the BEST New Year’s gift I could have received! According to Jenny’s letter posted on her site Rainforest Maths will be “under the care of the educational team at Mathletics.” Jenny’s letter goes on to explain “Teachers who are not Mathletics subscribers, will be provided with free access to all Rainforest Maths resources for their class for 2009. Just email rainforestmaths@3plearning.com for details.” Needless to say I have already sent my email and will be doing a little happy dance on January 22nd when I can once again use this amazing math resource with students. So sending a great big THANK YOU to both Jenny Eather for sharing her fantastic resources and for the folks at Mathletics for giving Rainforest Maths a “good home”. ENJOY!

I found this very fun, very educational BBC Math File site that offers games for reinforcing several math concepts such as rounding, arranging decimals, geometry, probability, ect. It has a great, fun format where you spin the wheel and play the game where the wheel stops– it brings to mind Wheel of Fortune. The game even has it’s own Vanna and Pat– OK so you might need a grand imagination to see that correlation!! One of the features I like about the game is that there is a link to key ideas (right top corner) which allows for review of the concept prior to playing the game. Additioanlly, the games work well on the SMARTBoard. I am partial to “Builder Ted”, but they all are creative an filled with learning — ENJOY!!

For any math teacher teaching or reviewing the concepts of mean, median and range there is a great educational game from Crickweb called Mean Runners, that you most definitely should explore. The site gives very good instructions- the game is pretty simple. Students watch a race and then are given the results of the top 3 finishers. From that information they are asked to calculate the mean, median and range. Answers are placed in the input boxes -the boxes next to the input boxes give the answers so I would keep them hidden until you click on the check inputs button. This activity presents very well on the SMARTBoard. Just a fun way to address a math concept that may not be so exciting to some students! ENJOY!

I am still on the hunt for interactive educational games that will reinforce fractions and I am happy to say this afternoon I discovered one that I give an A+!! It’s called Kids and Cookies. I love the way it is takes a real life situation and makes it into a learning opportunity. ”This game, designed for preschool and elementary students, introduces concepts of rational number and division through the simulation of sharing cookies with friends. The online version has no sound; downloadable versions have additional (and optional) voiceover and music”. ENJOY!
