Below are a links to some Special Education Resources that I have found helpful both as a Special Education Teacher and a recent “SMART Boarder”! I have spent several hours surfing the web and have looked at countless websites and these are my top picks.
Websites
Priory Woods School- free resources/lessons for students with significant cognitive challenges (switch activities).
Askability- on-line activities incorporating symbols.
Symbol World- free monthly symbol magazine along with on-line activities for symbol readers of all ages.
NYCDOE Special Education District 75- LOTS of free adapted books in a variety of formats including PP (which is great for a SMART Board lesson)
Fairfax County Public Schools- premade Boardmaker activities
Virtual Keyboard- a fun site for students motivated by music-allowing students to create their own music (great for cause/affect objectives)
Symbols Inclusion Project- resources and activities incorporating symbols
Scholastic Kids I Spy- online I Spy games (used for eye/hand coordination & cause/affect objectives
News-2-You- a weekly on-line newspaper for symbol readers (there is a yearly subscription fee)
American Sign Language Browser from Michigan State University. Click on a letter at the bottom of the page to bring up an index of words that begin with that letter. Click on the word to bring up a video of the word being signed. It’s a great visual tool for those learning sign language.
Everday Life Project-a free, membership required, website designed to teach learners how to do life skills tasks. Can also be viewed in Spanish. Some activities have sound.
Best Buddies- dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment.
Disorder Zone Archives- gives an overview of some disorders, syndromes- helpful resource.
DeafBlind Online- free software for people who are deafblind or have learning disabilities.
ACE Centre- great resource. Giving a voice to students who struggle to communicate.
Free Resources from the NETfor (Special) Education- Blog filled with resources/ideas/activities.
Hiyah-Free software for children who cannot use a mouse- developed by a mom.
